A little bit of history

BoatAlthough a Kingdom of Denmark, Greenland has enjoyed Home Rule since 1979. Inuit people are the predominant population and are related to the Inuits in Canada, Alaska, and Siberia. The total population of the country is around 55,000. Most Greenlanders speak Danish and there are many who can now speak English.

The colorful fishing village of Maniitsoq, our base during our heli week, boasts a population of around 4,000. The Maniitsoq area is typified by deep, narrow fjords and some of the highest mountains on the west coast. In 1755 the town was built as a colony on the site where the Kangaamiut settlement is located today. It was moved to its present-day location in 1782.

Archaeological finds prove that the area has been settled for more than 4,000 years, and the town's museum displays its abundant collection of these finds. The town is also known for its production of distinctive artwork and handicraft.

GuestsThe bird and sea life in this area are plentiful. If we are lucky, we will see migrating whales, including the narwhal. Some times it is possible to see from our hotel massive icebergs floating past Maniitsoq. There are polar bears in Greenland but they are not common in the south. Musk oxen and reindeer can be seen between Kangerlussuag and Maniitsoq.

Greenland is the northern most country in the world and also the world's largest island. Much of coastal Greenland meets the sea in towering cliffs, walls of glacial ice, and ancient rock - the oldest on the planet (dating 3.7 billion years old). Away from the coast, the land lies beneath a 10,000 foot sheet of ice. This burden is so great that the island's interior has sunk to a level of approximately 1,000 feet below sea level.
